Subject: Official MQSeries Compatibility Statement?

Does anyone happen to know where I can find a more-or-less official,
written statement regarding the compatibility of various versions of
MQSeries?

The specific products are OS/390 v2.1 communicating with HP-UX v2.21 and
HP-UX v5.0. I've searched through IBM manuals and websites, but no luck so
far.

Many thanks, ..Bill..

It's still there. As best I can tell, it is inherent in the product
design. In other words, the movement from node to node is done by
calling a function. Rollback is simply unwinding the call stack.

Hi,

I am using BMC monitor my two queue managers (ver 5.1) under Sun Solaris
2.6 with Sun Cluster Configuration.
BMC monitor queue, Channel and more. Qdepth will show you "the number of
message waiting", But Qdepth show you more like: you can define threshold
value to activate Warning/Alarm msg and trigger Recovery Action and so on.
I guess your current BMC not configure MQ agent yet as BMC process
monitoring is enough to tell you if a MQ process is running on a particular
server.
How to doing BMC monitoring MQ queue, please read MQ documentation, I am
not sure which part you are more interested in.
    Thanks
    Anhui

Hello,

Has anyone used BMC Patrol to monitor queues and the number of messages
waiting? If so, how are you doing it? We currently use BMC to inform
us if a MQ process isn't running on a particular server, but not to
actually monitor the queues. I'd really appreciate any words of wisdom.

Thanks,

Tim, try this one. I don't guarantee it will work. I had this problem
before and it was extremely hard to solve. Just in case you are facing the
same problem.

Do a global search on your whole harddisk and look for any amq*.dll not
residing in the MQSeries directory, esp under WINNT and it's subdir. Remove
them or just rename it to amq*.dxx or something and try again.

Let me know if it works.

amqsputc ist for the client version, amqsput for the server version. Do
you have client and server on the same maschine? Additional, for the
Client you need a Client Connection Table, und a SRVCHANNEL.

I'm not using WebSphere, I'm using BEA WebLogic. The strange thing is it seems to
work intermittently.

bad news I am afraid. I believe that MQ V5.0 - support ended for
distrubuted patforms (ie. HP, AIX, Solaris, and NT ) ended 31/01/2001.
Support for MQ v2.1 on HP probably ended ages before that. Not sure about
the os390 though. You can find out officially what is still supported by
going to this url

 http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ts/mqseries/platforms/supported.html

good luck.

B.Jaya,

Sorry, there is no such option while putting a message. You will have to
look at disabling the recipients ability of doing a destructive read on the
target Queue where the message resides. MQOPEN queue with Browse option or
only give them access to an Alias Queue.

If it were possible to put a message with browse to prevent Users getting
destructively the message, then MQ would have to allow you to specify the
Users who could get message destructively, else nobody could ever get the
message off the queue.

I hope this helps.

Gerry Woods

Hi all,
I want to put a message into the Queue where the
other end (While Getting) user should be able to
browse only and not able to destroy(get Option) the
message from the queue. That means is there any put
option in the message header where i can set that
other users can only browse and not get(destroy

Has any body tried this option? If yes please let me
know that.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,
I noticed on Sun Solaris 2.7, that when you define a QMGR
eg.QUEUE.MANAGER_USAGE.EXT, the MQS.ini entry for the directory looks as
follows:
Directory=QUEUE!MANAGER_USAGE!EXT.
Question, anybody out there knows why it substitutes the !(exclamation) for a
.(full stop)?

Yes, I realize you are using WebLogic. But if you are using MA88 as your
JMS implementation then WebSphere 3.5.3 is required for JTA/XA support. You
do not have XA support using MA88 standalone. WebLogic might provide some
mechanism to enable XA support with MA88, I don't know of one, however. The
white paper reference was suggested as a guide to what pieces would be
required with WebSphere, you of course would have to adapt it to
WebLogic-speak.

Emile,

This happens because our need to support different filesystems with
different limitations. There are a set of characters that we do not want to
use in filenames and/or directories. '.' is one of them. This is because on
some filesystems the '.' character has special meaning, FAT for example.
There are many other reasons why we might need to change the name of the
directory to something other than the Queue Manager name. For example, the
Queue Manager name is longer than the filesystem supports or the directory
we would naturally like to use already exists.

When you issue CRTMQM the Queue Manager 'mangles' the Queue Manager name to
construct the file name and stores the name it chose in the MQS.INI file.

The bottom line is that you should never assume that the name of the
directory is ALWAYS the same as the Queue Manager name. Sometimes, that
just isn't possible.

Cheers,
Paul.

I'm afraid I'm used to OS/390 and not an NT person so I wonder if someone
can tell me what I'm doing wrong here....

I have MQ v5.2 on an NT server, I have set up a local group on the server.

I have added my userid to the group.

I have then issued setmqaut commands to grant allmqi authorisations to the
group over the queue manager and the queues I want to use.

If I display the groups authorisations for the qmgr and queues it shows
everything as I require it.

However, when I run amqsputc from my client (NT, v5.2, different machine) I
get a 2035 (not authorised).

I ran a trace on the client and found this is on the MQCONN call. I've even
specifically granted my own userid connection authorisation over the queue
manager but still get the 2035 on the CONN.

I've refreshed security / refreshed the queue manager even re-booted the
server but to no avail.

What else do I have to do ??

Pete Moir,
Bank of America, UK.

We had problems of this sort. The Client ID was logged on to the domain in
the network
Trying to use the userid within the local server.
The "SID' did not match because NT puts the domain name in the SID.
Of course this did not show in the error messy ages.
To correct this we had the user on the client logon to there on userid local
to the machine.

Subject: MQ for NT 5.2 performance problem

Fellow MQers,

After we upgraded our MQ on the NT server to 5.2 we're experiencing very
substantial performance degradation. Does anyone have the same problem? If
you do, how do you solve the performance problem?

We also have some performance problem with large messages (32K+) even though
we've followed IBM's recommendation to tune the system. We understand large
messages are buffer intensive, but we have no choice but to use large
messages because unlike NT, mainframe MQ does not support message
segmentation. Your valuable suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Jane & Mohamed.

Peter,
I have seen this before. Although the MCAUSER appears blank it
actually contains unprintable characters introduced when the SVRCONN channel
was defined.

Issue al ALTER CHANNEL(your svrconn channel name) CHLTYPE(SVRCONN) MCAUSER('
')

and gie it another whirl.

Subject: xml attributes in MQSIV2

Hello,

I've noticed in the esql reference for MQSI that to explicitly reference a
child element (from say an attribute of the parent that might have the same
name - bad practice I know, just theoretical...) one can use the syntax
(XML.tag) to tell the parser to find the child element. Is there a similar
construct for attributes, like (XML.attr)? Moreover, I want to be able to
take variables in MQSI and append their value to an xml doc as an attribute,
not an element. TIA,
Rob Quigley

You don't specify platform, but my guess is it is Windows 2000. MQSeries
5.2.1 is certified to run on Windows 2000. This something you have to
purchase I believe because there is no download for an update and they have
a trial version of it you can use. Trial tells me you have to pay for the
real deal.

Subject: MQ for NT 5.2 performance

After we upgraded our MQ on the NT server to 5.2, we've experienced very
substantial performance degradation. Has anyone experienced the same
problem? If you have, how do you resolve this problem ? We don't want to
regress to MQ 5.1.

We also have some performance problem with large messages (37K+) even though
we've followed IBM's recommendation to tune the system. We understand
large messages are buffer intensive, but we have no choice but to use large
messages. Unlike MQ on NT, the mainframe MQ does not support message
segmentation and regrouping. Our NT server exchanges data with the
mainframe MQ.

Your valuable input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Of course. Any MQ client application can send/receive messages to any other
MQ application. JMS or Java has little to do with it.

However, if in the JMS object definitions you do not specify that the target
client is a non-JMS aware client, the sender (JMS) will use the RFH2 header
to store the JMS property values in the message's "header". Otherwise
send/receiving between JMS based clients and C/C++ clients is a
no-brainer... We do it all the time here. Check out the "MQSeries Using Java
PDF" (csqzaw07.pdf), for more information on how MQ maps fields.

Sorry about not being specific. The problem is when we do MQPUT and MQGET
with no other logic from the MQ 52 NT server to the mainframe MQ (either
with 5.2 or 2.1 version) we consistantly get a much slower response time.
We're using sending and receiving channels. The result is also consistent
regardless of message size. Thanks. Jane

Jerry,

>>>We are on the way to decide which is better Java
>>>interface to MQ or JMS interface (using MQ behind
>>>the JMS)? Please comment on the pros/cons.

JMS pros:
1) JMS is generally seen as easier to use (although this is subjective).
2) JMS is an open standard, while the Java API is specific to MQSeries.
Benefits of this are:
- Investment protection, both in skills and application code.
- Availability of people skilled in JMS application programming possibly
greater than that for MQSeries alone.
- The ability to plug in different JMS implementations to fit different
requirements
3) There are additional features that are supported by JMS that are not
present in the MQ Java classes, such as:
- Message selectors
- Direct support for publish/subscribe
- Structured message classes
- JTA/XA support (with WebSphere V3.5.3)

JMS cons:
1) JMS is built using the MQ Java classes, so there is a performance
penalty.
2) JMS appends an additional header (an RFH2), which non-JMS partners have
to handle manually.
3) Not all MQSeries features are included in the JMS spec.

Hope this helps.

Anyone have any tips, advice, docs, etc. on how to monitor MQ with
Tivoli? Also, any gotchas, warnings, etc.? Our MQ platforms are AIX and
Windows2000.

Thanks in advance! This is one of the great lists IMHO!

Please reply to (or cc) mprice@microgeneral.com. Thanks!

Version 5.2.1 is for Windows 2000 only. However, 5.2 is available for AS400
and of course a bunch of PTFs. Your original is confusing because the
subjext sayd from 4.2.1 to 5.2.1 which are valid for AS400 but your note
body says 5.2 to 5.2.1. I hope this answers your question either way.

And I would certainly concur with this statement. We recently junked all of
our JMS code and reverted back to the MQ Java interface because the JMS
performance was simply abysmal.

Subject: MQSI Stack Overflow

Hi,

We have just hit a problem during preliminary performance testing of one of
our message flows. We have a message flow which batches up records and
creates an output message. The message flow uses a series of nodes in a
loop to perform the batching and transformation of the message before the
output message can be created. It appears that if we send a large batch of
records through this message flow we hit problems with MQSI. The following
problem is logged within the Windows NT Event Viewer:

( XBRE_NTX_BD1.Temp_01 ) Broker process terminating abnormally (stack full):
diagnostic information for IBM 'Process Id 209, Thread Id 1d7 -- Stack Overflow at 0x0C1D0EFA -- '.

A broker process is terminating abnormally because its stack is full. For execution group
processes, this may be caused by message flows containing loops or more than 500 nodes in series.
Otherwise the following information will be required when contacting IBM: 'Process Id 209, Thread Id 1d7 --
Stack Overflow at 0x0C1D0EFA -- '.

We are using the following configuration/setup:

   WindowsNT 4 SP6A
   MQSI 2.0.2
   MQSeries 5.2 CSD1

Its possible (haven't calculated this yet) that the message flow when batching this particular batch of records needs to loop and in the process has
to use 500 nodes
in series. Does anyone know if this is a bug within MQSI? Is there a way of increasing the stack? Is this a documented limitation of MQSI? Any
assistance would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance....

Kulbir.

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced with MQ for UnixWare(v.2.1.2)

I was looking at IBM site and I find that who makes MQ for UnixWare is
Willow Technologies. Is it full compatible with the others Unix versions
made by IBM (like Solaris, AIX, Linux)?

We are planning to connect Avaya (Lucent) 'Talkers' to Mainframe with
MQ. Has anyone done it yet???

Thanks in advance.

Andrew,

I believe it's because MQ creates quite a few links when it is installed.
Links do not copy well (or at all for that matter). I think your only
choices
are to copy and follow links or copy and not follow links. Either way, you
do not end up with the same directory structure as the original.
