Best Used Cars for Sale in the UK

It is more than likely you can accurately predict the bestselling cars in the UK. You are probably quite familiar with the popular models that your neighbours and colleagues drive, you know the famous makes, and you are well aware that the days when the British car industry manufactured mass-driven vehicles are long gone. Nowadays, competition for best used cars for sale in the UK is tough.

The highest scoring used automatic cars for sale are Fords, particularly the Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo models. Ford is a popular make, cheap to maintain and relatively economic. The price of a used Ford is low, and availability in stores is huge, which makes it a top choice among UK buyers. In second and third places are Vauxhall and Volkswagen, two makes that are very similar in price range and popularity. Well-liked used Vauxhall models include Corsa, Astra, Zafira and Vectra, all manufactured by General Motors. The preferred used Volkswagen is the Golf, manufactured in Germany. Volkswagen also scores highly with the BMW 3 Series and Audi range. Although prices of a new BMW or Audi can be quite high, buying a cheaper used alternative is very common in the UK. Finally, the Japanese Mazda, Honda and Toyota are competing with the French Peugeot, Renault and Citroën for the last positions in the top ten. It seems that the Japanese are gaining a reputation for reliable and safe cars, but the French still cut it as leaders in innovation and easy-to-maintain motors.

The simple truth is that it is a very specific combination of factors that make a used car ‘best selling’. Everyone knows the expensive cars, the cool cars, and the ones with the biggest engines, but it is difficult to point out the best selling. The popular used cars for sale boast an average price, are reliable, are easy to maintain, are a popular make, require no major repairs, and are safe and easy to drive. It seems that the German cars tick all the boxes for best-selling used cars among UK drivers.

Common Problems to Look for With Used Cars

When buying any used Vauxhall you should always do as much of your own investigating as you possibly can. Do not take the owner’s word for it that the car is in great condition, that it runs well, or that it has never been in an accident. The truth is the current owner may not know the full history of the car.

Some common problems that come with buying used cars can be previous damage, odometer roll backs and airbag issues. These types of things are not typically what a mechanic would look for if they were inspecting a used car. They would keep their eyes open for frame damage, fluid leaks, rust spots and other potential mechanical issues.

Odometer roll backs or ‘clocking’ is not something car dealers like to talk about, however, it is an unfortunate aspect of buying a used car. Most odometers are digital, making the flash chip easy to remove and reprogram. A thorough history check will reveal the true mileage.

To ensure a thorough inspection of airbags, ask your mechanic to pull the bag covers. This is the only way to tell if the airbags have been deployed. It is also the only way to see if they have been replaced with the proper size bags or if they are altogether missing.

You can do a visual check by checking whether all the VIN numbers on the car match. VIN numbers are stamped at several places on all vehicles, including the dashboard, doors and bonnet. If there is a mismatched VIN number, the chances are the vehicle has been stolen.

Great deals on the Volkswagen Polo Match

My Ford Fiesta is due to be part exchanged soon and I fancied something different, imagine my supprise when I opened the local paper at the weekend and saw that my local Volkswagen Dealer was offering the new Polo Match with over £650 of extras, free insurance for the first year, 3 years servicing and free fuel up to 8,000 miles.

After phoning our dealer I booked in for a test drive yesterday afternoon with Paul and I really loved the feel of the car. The gears are smooth and the steering feels firm, griping to the road effortlessly.

After heading home last night and chatting to the wife I think the deal is a no-brainer and am off tomorrow to do a deal.

I’ll let you know when I can expect my new car to be delivered and post some pictures of it and a review.

Test Driving a Used Car

Let’s say you have found used cars for sale that you like and seem like a good deal.  You have taken a look at it and inspected it.  That is a good start, but you need to go further than that.  It is imperative that you take a test drive.  If the car owner won’t let you do so, then walk away from the deal.  If you don’t know how the car is going to drive, then it would be foolish to purchase it.

By taking a test drive, you will get a much better sense of what you are getting.  After all, how a car runs is the most important thing.  Make sure that the ignition works fine, and be sure to check all the different functions in the car.  Make sure the windshield wipers, the headlights, the windows, and all the other similar things work.

Then, it is time to drive the car.  Be sure to test it both in the city and on the highway.  In the city, you can check the brakes and test how well the car turns.  On the motorway, you will see how the car handles at high speeds.  Be sure to also check how well the car drives in reverse.  Make sure everything sounds normal.  If you hear any funny noises, be sure to ask about it or have it checked out.  If you think you’ve found yourself a good car, then you can probably feel confident that you are getting the deal you want.

Buying a car at a Car Supermarket

Unlike a regular car showroom, which will only have a relatively small number of new cars readily available and instead order in new cars based on customer specifications, car supermarkets will tend to have hundreds of new and used cars readily available for customers to drive away in.  This means that those looking to drive away with a new car can often do so much more easily buying from a car supermarket than they would if buying from a regular dealer.

Car supermarkets also tend to have lower prices than regular dealers do as they buy their cars in bulk rather than place individual orders.  However, this can have a downside as the new cars often have very little or no optional upgrades.  This means that any changes would have to be made after sale, and may prevent some major internal upgrades from being made.  Common upgrades such as fitting alloy wheels or upgrading a stereo system can easily be performed after sale, though.

Along with low prices, another major advantage of buying cars from car supermarkets is that you are generally able to obtain all of the services you need in one place.  Car supermarkets almost always offer part exchange deals for those looking to trade in their existing cars, and can usually offer comprehensive car credit services.  Car supermarkets often work with external car finance companies, making it easier for those with poor credit histories or CCJs to obtain car finance.

How to Test Drive a Car

It is essential that you test drive a car before you buy it.  If you are planning on keeping it for five years or possibly longer, as many people do, buying used cars on a whim and then regretting it is something that you may regret for a long time.  Select several cars that you are interested in and any dealership should be happy to allow you to test drive them for around half an hour.

When you are on the test drive, try to evaluate the car by doing as much of your regular style of driving as possible.  If you drive a lot on the motorway, head to a motorway and see how it behaves at cruising speed.  Alternatively, if you commute through busy city streets, see how the car deals with stop-start driving.  If you have health issues, perhaps with your back, check how easy it is to get in and out of the vehicle.

Next, try to arrange your next test drive as soon as possible after the first one, as this will allow you to make an almost instant comparison between the two vehicles.  It can be hard to remember how one car feels compared to another with a big time difference between the two.  Try to arrange test drives for the middle of the week, which should mean the dealership will be quieter than at the weekend and ensure that the sales staff are likely to give you more of their attention.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Used Car

Buying a used car rather than a new car can save you a lot of money.  However, there are various important factors to consider before buying a used vehicle.

Choosing the Right Model

In order to choose the right model an approximate budget for buying your car should be decided.  You then have to decide what you need from the vehicle.  For example, you may choose a small used car for daily commuting, or a larger car if you’re planning to go on longer trips with a large number of passengers.  Fuel consumption is of course very relevant, and you may decide it’s best to buy a car with a smaller and more economical engine.

Car History Details

You should check the year of manufacture, technical specifications, accident history and other important details.  It is also worth checking to see if there are any loans outstanding on the vehicle.

Payment Options

If you need to apply for a loan, search for reputable car finance companies that offer good deals and interest rates that will allow for comfortable repayment of the loan.

A Test Drive is Mandatory

A used car should never be purchased without taking the car on a test drive for at least a couple of kilometres.  This will allow you to assess the driving experience and check the steering and engine health.  The working condition of the brakes, tyres, speedometer, lights, and other accessories such as the air-conditioning and audio system also should be examined.
